Theme Days

Except for those in very rural locations, everyone has street corners nearby. Many of us would look for something interesting and shoot it straight on. However, that’s not the only approach. This illustration, while not in the city where I live, is in my home town, looking straight up from the corner of 53rd Street and Third Avenue in Manhattan on a misty evening. CDP photographers show us all the angles this month.

It’s time for our annual tradition for New Year’s Day. City Daily Photo members post their favorite photo out of a year of shooting. I’m sure we will see some wonderful images. The picture below is from the end of our annual Artica festival.

The CDP theme for December is local history. Every place in the world has stories behind it. The illustration here is from the museum beneath St. Louis’ Gateway Arch. Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau were the French traders who founded the place in 1764. Chouteau expressed optimism, but that was then and this is now. Today CDP members tell local tell local tales from around the world.

The CDP theme for November is my favorite place in town. This is very personal.  Every town and every photographer is different. If you don’t live in a town you might want to use your region. Tell us why it is your favorite. City Daily Photo members around the world will tell you where to hang out when you visit.

The CDP theme for October is transportation. How do you get from A to B, whether it’s from Alice’s to Bob’s or Anchorage to Brasilia? You are not likely to fly to the moon, as suggested in the example, but we can dream. CDP members around the world will show us their preferred means of locomotion.

The CDP theme for September is bottle. They are useful – they can contain liquids, gasses, powders, or, on a very good day, a genie. Bottles range from tiny perfume containers to double magnums of Bordeaux. As seen in this photo, they can be fake. CDP members will show us their flasks and contents from around the world.

The CDP theme for August is garden. They can be found in all climates and terrains, dry or wet, cold or tropical. A good one takes time and skill but the form is limited only by the imagination of the gardener. CDP members will show us their own gardens or those in their surroundings from around the world.

The CDP theme for July is climate. Everybody talks about it and far too few people do anything about it. In the area where this admin lives, it is common to see Porsche SUVs (even Maserati SUVs!) and houses so big they could house a score of refugees. City Daily members will show the effect in their local communities.

The City Daily Photo theme is Smile. They can reflect a wide range of feelings. Think of a parent and baby, a sports champion or The Joker. CDP members may show us smiles of joy, love or something with a bit of an edge. The Linky is open from May 25 to June 5.

The City Daily Photo May theme is museums. We might quickly think of our local art museum, if we have one, but there all sorts of museums about everything. What’s in your town? This picture, which I think has some sweet irony, was taken at the San Francisco Museum of Contemporary Art. I’ll have something local and unexpected on the first of the month.
