Last night, we ate takeout from one of our favorite restaurants: Birrieria Pepe El Toro on University Way. It was great as always.
But the focus of today’s post is the long history of restaurants operating inside houses. I understand this history was shaped by zoning and immigrant entrepreneurship. But the main reason we enjoy restaurants in homes is the neighborhood culture they build.

This photo does a great job of showing prospective. When you see the 747 tail on the plane, the tail does not look very large. But when I take of photo of my wife in front of a 747 tail you see how large the tail is.
This photo was taken at the Future of Flight in Everett Washington which is very close to Seattle.
This last weekend relatives came to town and naturally we went to the Seattle Pike Place Fish Market to see the fish toss. We were not disappointed. Look closely and you will find a fish in mid-air.
I understand this an old tradition where fishmongers hurl heavy salmon cross the counter while shouting load, rhythmic chants.

I took this photo because of the song Saginaw Michigan by Lefty Frizzell. The photo also does a good job of showing the size of Yachts often seen in the Seattle area.
This photo was taken on our recent trip to Friday Harbor in the San Jaun Islands.
Today’s photo shows a Seattle challenge. Boats and Plans on in the same body of water. You have to keep track of all the other water craft moving near you as well as any float planes which are landing or taking off.
There are officially floatplane landing zones in Seattle. However; I can attest, from personal experience, you need to keep your eyes on the sky as well as the water.
I’m showing my ignorance in that I had no idea there was a store named Free People. Today’s photo is of the Free People store in the UVillage Mall in Seattle. A little research finds that Free People is based on a 1970’s store called The Free People’s Store. As the business grew the name changed to Urban Outfitters which I was aware of. But in 1984 the name changed again to Free people.
I understand the name reflects the sprit of the you customers it serves. People looking for freedom and individuality in how they dress.

This vintage Fiatti sits at the entrance to an Italian restaurant we frequency in the University Village mall (most often called UVillage). The name of the restaurant is Piatti which I understand translates to Plate in English. But when we review or restaurant options we always think of this one as the restaurant with the little red car.
Today’s photo shows an art sculpture found at University Village shopping mall in Seattle.
I especially like the plaque for this art. It says: Be a penguin. Keep your hands at your sides and your feet on the ground.
I also found it humorous that the name of the store, in the background, is TWIST which contradicts the penguin suggestion 🙂
Today’s photo shows Pioneer Square, Seattle’s original neighborhood. You can see it is still going strong.
Note that we were not at this event, however our daughter and family were. They shared the photo via a text and I thought it did a great job of showing how vibrant Seattle is.
